Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: cellulose n., -oid suffix.
Etymology: < cellul- (in cellulose n.) + -oid suffix.
1. Plastic made from pyroxylin and camphor, widely used in manufacturing, esp. of photographic film; a plastic of this type.Celluloid began to go out of favour in manufacturing in the mid-20th cent., replaced by other plastics with a lower flammability and tendency to decompose.
