As it's written, the smoking bylaw would prohibit smoking in all enclosed public places, as well as commercial decks, cafes and patios, and private clubs.

Enforcement officers found that 97 per cent of premises had met the requirement to prohibit smoking in enclosed premises, and 79 per cent were displaying correct no-smoking signage.

The government also announced that it would prohibit smoking in government buildings and restrict it in other federally regulated workplaces.

The regulations only prohibited smoking within enclosed spaces, thus permitting smoking to continue in outside spaces.
