[f. med.L. Cumbria, f. W. Cymry:—prehist. W. *kombrogi, pl. of *kombrogos lit. fellow countryman (W. bro:—*mrog- region).]
A. adj.
1. Belonging to the ancient British kingdom of Cumbria, which included Cumberland.
2. Belonging to Cumberland, or its system of rocks; also, more widely, belonging to the Lake District and its fells, or to the county of Cumbria (formed in 1974 from Cumberland, Westmorland, and northern Lancashire).
B. n.
1. A native of the ancient British kingdom of Cumbria.
2. A native or inhabitant of Cumberland.
