A piece of armour covering a horse's neck or mane; a crinière.
1548Hall Chron. 12 One band had the scafferon the cranet, the bard of the horse all white. 1610J. Guillim Heraldry iv. (1660) 266 Defensive, serving for Horse..as the Shafrone, Cranet, Barde. 1611Cotgr., Criniere..a crannet; armor for the necke, or mane, of a horse.
