[The name of George O. Abell (b. 1927), U.S. astronomer.]
Used (a) attrib. and in the possessive (esp. in Abell('s) catalogue, Abell's cluster) with reference to Abell's catalogue of clusters of galaxies which satisfy certain criteria of richness (the number of galaxies in the central region of a cluster); (b) with a following numeral to denote a particular cluster in this catalogue.
