1832Planting 90 in Husb. III. (L.U.K.), Smart-hoops.—Shoots of the hazel, six feet in length; they are cleft for hoops, and are used..for salmon kits, small tubs, and other purposes of the cooper. [Cf. Peacock Lonsd. Gloss. (1869) 77/1 Smarts, small rods cut down in coppice woods.]
