1730–6Bailey (folio), Concertante (in Musick Books) signifies those Parts of a Piece of Musick that play throughout the whole, to distinguish them from those that play only in some parts.1791Gentl. In the last century this name was given to a piece of music for orchestra in which there were parts for solo instruments, and also to compositions for several solo instruments without orchestra...
