1. A name given to Orphism 2, because of its use of the principle of simultaneous contrast (simultaneous a. 1 b) (see also quot. 1959).
1915[see Orphism 2].1940R. H. Wilenski Mod. French Painters 238 Delaunay produced a series of Flat⁓pattern pictures with brightly coloured fragments of revolving discs—a type of Futurist-Dynamism which he called Simultanéisme and which Apollinaire christened ‘Orphism’.1959H. Read Conc. Hist. Mod. Painting iii. 94 [Delaunay] strove in particular to combine different aspects of figures and objects in the same painting. He himself gave the name of Simultanéisme to this kind of painting and was later to characterize it in these words: ‘Nothing horizontal or vertical—light deforms everything, breaks everything up.’1969R. Mayer Dict. Art Terms & Techniques 273/1 The chief exponent of the style [sc. Orphism], Robert Delaunay (1885–1941), preferred the name Simultaneism.
2. A movement in modern French poetry, led by Henri-Martin Barzun (b. 1881), which aimed at the effect of simultaneity of both images and sounds.
