simulium|sɪˈmjʊlɪəm| [mod.L. (P. A. Latreille Hist. Nat. Crustacés & Insectes (1802) III. 426), f. L. simul-āre to imitate + -ium.] A small dark-coloured blood-sucking fly of the genus Simulium, which may be the vector of certain diseases. Also collect. Cf. buffalo fly s.v. buffalo n. 5.
