cassiopeium|ˌkæsɪəˈpiːəm| [mod.L. (C. A. von Welsbach in Sitzungsberichte d. Akad. d. Wissenschaften Wien, Math.-naturw. Klasse, sect. 2 b, CXVI. 1435), f. Cassiopeia (see Cassiopeian a.).] An alternative name (now disused) for a rare-earth element now known as lutetium or lutecium.
1908Chem. Abstr. IV. 1393 Following the publication of the first article by the author [sc. G. Urbain] on this subject, Auer von Welsbach..described two substances obtained from ytterbium... He gave them the names aldebaranium and cassiopeium... The author claims priority in this work. 1966McGraw-Hill Encycl. Sci. & Technol. VII. 623 C. F. Auer von Welsbach..named the element cassiopeium, but lutetium is the accepted form at present. |
