A synthetic analogue of the ergot alkaloids that stimulates the dopaminergic receptors of the brain, inhibiting the release of prolactin, and is used in the treatment of Parkinsonism, galactorrhoea, hypogonadism, and other conditions; 2-brom-α-ergocryptine, C32H40N5O5Br .

Jrnl. 25 May 419/1 Bromocriptine (2-brom-α-ergocryptine, CB 154) specifically reduces prolactin secretion by an action at the pituitary level. 1977Lancet 19 Feb. 425/1 Wass et al. have reported six cases of peptic ulcer..in patients treated with bromocriptine for acromegaly. 1987Oxf. Textbk. Med. (ed. 2) I. x. 22/1 If functional hyperprolactinaemia is associated with galactorrhoea or infertility, bromocriptine can be a most effective treatment. |
