[Origin uncertain.
According to Skene, ‘called dyvour, because he does his devore to his creditours’. But this is not logical; and it leaves the vowel and stress of the first syllable unexplained. The phrase ‘drowned in debt’ in quots. 1597 and 1636, with the later ‘over head and ears in debt’, suggests that it may be the same word as diver.]
A bankrupt; hence gen. one in debt; a beggar.
