saurognathous, a. Ornith.|sɔːˈrɒgnəθəs| [f. mod.L. Saurognathæ pl., f. Gr. σαῦρο-ς lizard + γνάθ-ος jaw: see -ous.] Of, pertaining to, or characteristic of the Saurognathæ, W. K. Parker's superfamily of birds, the woodpeckers and their allies, characterized by an arrangement of the bones of the palate similar to that in lizards.
