sardelle|sɑːˈdɛl| Also 6–7 sardell, 8–9 sardel. [ad. It. sardella, dim. of sarda:—L. sarda, a. Gr. σάρδη sardine. Cf. F. † sardelle (16th c.), G. sardelle, Du. sardel.] A fish, Clupea or Sardinella aurita, resembling the sardine and prepared like it in certain Mediterranean ports.
