biopoesis|baɪəʊpəʊˈiːsɪs| [f. bio- + Gr. ποίησις making.] The (hypothetical) origination or evolution of living or lifelike structures from lifeless matter; abiogenesis. Hence bioˈpoeic a., pertaining to, causing, or resulting from biopoesis.
1953N. W. Pirie in Discovery Aug. 239/1 Biopoesis (the cognate adjective is biopoeic) seems a more suitable word than Huxley's abiogenesis for the making of life de novo. Words ending in genesis carry a sense of generation as in animals; the making of like by like. Ibid., Perhaps..there is no need to postulate any special biopoeic agency at all. 1967J. D. Bernal Orig. Life viii. 137 The modern view of biopoesis includes elements both of deterministic character and of the older teleological character. |
