单词 Pulfrich
释义 Pulfrich|ˈpʊlfrɪç|
The name of Carl Pulfrich (1858–1927), German physicist, used attrib. and in the possessive with reference to an optical illusion first pointed out by him (see Naturwissensch. (1922) X. 553), in which a pendulum that is swinging in a plane perpendicular to the line of sight appears to describe ellipses when one eye is covered with a filter and the other is uncovered.
1925Brit. Jrnl. Ophthalm. IX. 65 Men, getting on in years, who have been expert in games with a moving ball, find themselves unable to judge its position with their former accuracy... Pulfrich's phenomenon seems to give a probable explanation.1941S. H. Bartley Vision vii. 170 Pulfrich's stereoscopic pendulum is another example of a set of conditions which will induce the perception of movement of a kind not corresponding with the real movement of a physical object.1966R. L. Gregory Eye & Brain vi. 78 The trading of temporal discrimination for sensitivity with dark adaptation is most elegantly, if somewhat indirectly, observed in a curious and dramatic phenomenon known as the Pulfrich Pendulum Effect.1974Vision Res. XIV. 184/2 The only thing that is important in producing a Pulfrich effect is the relative luminance of the objects which move across the retinae whether these be ‘target’ or ‘background’ or whether the subject fixates a stationary point or follows a moving object.1980Sci. Amer. May 134/2 According to most hypotheses about the Pulfrich illusion, the dark filter delays the perception of the visual signal at the retina of the covered eye.
