pteropod|ˈtɛrəpɒd| [ad. mod.L. Pteropoda, a. F. ptéropode (G. Cuvier 1804, in Ann. Mus. Hist. Nat. IV. 232): see pteropoda.] a. Zool. A pelagic marine gastropod belonging to the class Pteropoda, which includes molluscs having a modified foot bearing lobes which act as fins; a sea butterfly.

This name was employed by Mr. Murray during the cruise of the Challenger to designate those deep-sea deposits in which a very large part of the calcareous organisms consists of the dead shells of Pteropods and Heteropods. 1894S.
