‖ pteraspis Palæont.|pt-, təˈræspɪs| [mod.L., f. Gr. πτερόν wing + ἀσπίς, ἀσπιδ- shield.] A fossil genus of ganoid fishes of the Devonian age.
1857in H. Miller O.R. Sandst. viii. (ed. 23) 149 note, Cephalaspis rostratus is a Pteraspis; and Prof. Huxley and Mr. Salter describe Cephalaspis Lewisii and Lloydii as Pteraspides. 1880Günther Fishes 354 Pteraspis, with the cephalic shield finely striated or grooved, composed of seven pieces. Hence pteraˈspidian a., belonging to this genus.
