backsplash, n. Brit. |ˈbaksplaʃ|, U.S. |ˈbækˌsplæʃ| [‹ back- comb. form + splash n.1] 1. orig. and chiefly N. Amer. Any of various installations in a kitchen or bathroom designed to protect a wall, appliance, etc., from food stains or water damage; spec. (a) an upright panel fitted behind or forming the upper back part of a cooker, on which its controls are sometimes set; (b) an area of tiles or other waterproof material behind or around a sink, counter-top, bath, etc. Cf. splashback n., splashplate n. at splash- comb. form Affix 1.
