† ˈproxenete Obs. Also 7 -et. [a. F. proxénète (16th c. in Littré), or ad. L. proxenēta, ad. Gr. προξενητής a negotiator, agent, agent-n. f. προξενεῖν to be one's πρόξενος (see next), to manage for another.] One who negotiates something, esp. a marriage; an agent, go-between, match-maker.
