The destruction of cells of the body by the action of their own enzymes. Hence auˈtolysate, a substance produced by autolysis; autolyse |ˈɔːtəʊlaɪz| v. intr. and trans., to undergo or cause to undergo autolysis; auˈtolysin [-in1], a substance that produces autolysis (Webster, 1934); autolytic |ɔːtəʊˈlɪtɪk| a., belonging to or of the nature of autolysis.
