‖ au pair|o pɛr, əʊ pɛə(r)| [F., on equality.] Applied to an arrangement between two parties by which mutual domestic services are rendered formerly without consideration of money payment; esp. of a young girl learning the language of a foreign country while rendering certain services in return for hospitality. Also attrib. Hence as n., a person who is ‘au pair’.
