pre-comˈpress, v. Building. [pre- A. 1.] trans. To compress prior to some other treatment. Hence pre-comˈpression, spec. the compressive force exerted in prestressed concrete by the reinforcing rods.
1936Structural Engineer XIV. 259/1 A sketch of the great 10,000 tons press constructed for the laboratory for Buildings and Public Works,..Paris... It was constructed in concrete with only a light reinforcement, but precompressed by the tension given to the hooped wire. 1940Ibid. XVIII. 629 In a pre-stressed girder the fact that the part..has been given a pre-compression equal to or exceeding the said tension, renders it impossible for fissures to appear under normal loading or even higher loading. 1946Concrete & Constructional Engin. XLI. 191 In a cracked section of a prestressed member, the precompression is either reduced or totally annulled. 1969Civil Engin. (Easton, Pa.) June 45/1 In the arch section, over-compression of the upper flange was prevented by precompressing the arches: the span was made 1in. shorter at each end with hydraulic jacks. 1974Lin & Zia in B. Bresler Reinforced Concrete Engin. I. vi. 303 Prestressing imparts a precompression to a concrete member in its tension zone so as to increase its cracking resistance. 1975Kong & Evans Reinforced & Prestressed Concrete ix. 196 The precompression in the concrete tends to reduce the diagonal tension. |
