populin Chem.|ˈpɒpjʊlɪn| [ad. F. populine (Braconnot 1831), f. L. pōpul-us poplar: see -in1.] A white crystalline substance, C20H22O8, having a sweetish taste, obtained from the bark, leaves, and roots of the aspen (Pōpulus tremula).
1838T. Thomson Chem. Org. Bodies 766 Populin has a sweet taste, not unlike that of liquorice. 1873Watts Fownes' Chem. (ed. 11) 642 Populin is a substance resembling salicin in appearance. Hence ˈpopulinate v. trans., to impregnate with populin as an antiseptic.
