[app. an alteration of the earlier word policlinic, in which it is referred to the Greek πολυ- (see poly-), and used in a different sense.]
1. a. ‘A general clinic devoted to the treatment of various diseases’ (Syd. Soc. Lex.); (a) ‘an institution furnishing clinical instruction in all kinds of diseases’; (b) ‘a hospital in which all forms of disease are treated’. b. In mod. use, a clinic not attached to a hospital where specialists in various branches of medicine are available to outpatients.

1898Times 16 Dec. 9/5 Mr. Hutchinson's ‘Polyclinic’, a title which, whatever it has ‘come to denote’, seems an odd one to apply to an institution which will have ‘no beds of its own’. 1900J.
