ˈpigeon-ˌhawk A hawk that preys on pigeons: a name given in England to the sparrow-hawk, and sometimes to the goshawk; in U.S. to the American merlin (Falco columbarius) and related species, also sometimes to the sharp-shinned hawk (Accipiter velox).
