pneumatolytic, a. Petrol.|ˌnjuːmətəʊˈlɪtɪk| [ad. G. pneumatolytisch (R. Bunsen 1851, in Ann. d. Physik LXXXIII. 238): see pneumato- and -lytic.] Involving or formed by pneumatolysis.
1896Phillips & Louis Treat. Ore Deposits (ed. 2) i. 173 There seems no urgent reason for adopting the theory of pneumatolytic, in preference to ordinary hydrothermal action. 1903[see fumarolic a.]. 1909J. P. Iddings Igneous Rocks I. vii. 276 Those minerals that appear to depend largely upon the action of gases in magmas for their presence in igneous rocks have been called pneumatolytic. 1963D. W. & E. E. Humphries tr. Termier's Erosion & Sedimentation vi. 134 The minerals of rocks can be altered without exposure at the surface by pneumatolytic or hydrothermal action. 1972Nature 3 Mar. 13/1 They interpreted this variation as the result of pneumatolytic and gravitative differentiation taking place in the lava column. Hence pneumatoˈlytically adv.
1962Proc. Yorks. Geol. Soc. XXXIII. 329 The systems of valleys which evolved would be to some extent guided by the prior existence of pneumatolytically altered zones. 1968I. Kostov Mineralogy ii. v. 362 The lithium micas are typical products of pneumatolitically [sic] altered acid rocks of the ‘greisen’ type. |
