plazolite Min.|ˈplæzəʊlaɪt| [f. Gr. πλάζ-ειν to perplex + -ite1.] A calcium aluminosilicate that occurs as small, colourless to pale yellow, dodecahedral crystals with a vitreous lustre, and is probably a variety or impure form of hibschite.
1920W. F. Foshag in Amer. Mineralogist V. 183 Included in some material collected by the writer near Riverside, California, were several specimens of vesuvianite associated with small colorless dodecahedrons. The latter proved to be distinct from any known species and the writer proposes the name plazolite from the greek plazo, to perplex, in allusion to the difficulty in interpreting its composition. 1941Amer. Mineralogist XXVI. 451 Hibschite and plazolite are very much alike in their properties. Chemically, plazolite differs only by a small and rather variable content of CO2, and geometrically by the form of its crystals. 1962W. A. Deer et al. Rock-Forming Minerals I. 104 Plazolite originally was thought to contain essential CO2, but this has been shown to be due to contamination and plazolite must be regarded as being similar to hibschite. 1968Mineral. Abstr. XIX. 139/2 The so-called skarns accompanying some ore deposits in the western region of Honshu Island are revealed to be composed of many veinlets which contain hydrous silicate. The most remarkable..are scawtite, hillebrandite, plazolite, [etc.]. |
