a. A flat plate of metal for various purposes. Obs.

3. Printing.
a. An iron (formerly wooden) plate in a printing-press, which presses the paper against the inked type so as to secure an impression; hence spec. a flat metal surface by means of which pressure is applied in a press. Also applied to a similar part in other machines.
