plasmal Biochem.|ˈplæzməl| [a. G. plasmal (coined with plasmalogen): see plasm and -al2.] An aldehyde formed by the hydrolysis of a plasmalogen; chiefly used attrib. in plasmal reaction, a modification of the Feulgen reaction for detecting plasmalogens and aldehydes in tissue.
1925Chem. Abstr. XIX. 1156 Plasmal is an aldehyde, a solid at ordinary temp. Ibid., In accordance with its aldehyde nature, plasmal quickly takes a violet color when stained with H2SO3 fuchsin... This staining process is termed the plasmal reaction,..and the presence of plasmal, or its precursor plasmalogen, in frozen sections of tissues can be shown microscopically. 1949Stain Technol. XXIV. 19 The plasmal reaction is here modified so that it is made specific for acetal lipids alone. 1966McGraw-Hill Encycl. Sci. & Technol. X. 397/2 The Feulgen test for plasmalogens depends on the liberation of plasmal, principally palmitaldehyde and stearaldehyde, from these lipids by the action of mercuric chloride and acetic acid. 1969Acta Histochem.
