ˈpipe-fish [f. pipe n.1 + fish.] A fish of the genus Syngnathus or family Syngnathidæ, having a long slender body and a long snout.
1769Pennant Zool. III. 107 As we want a generical name in our language for this genus [Syngnathus], we call it the Pipe Fish, from its slender body. 1774Goldsm. Nat. Hist. (1776) VI. 289 The body of the Pipe Fish, in the thickest part, is not thicker than a swan-quill, while it is above sixteen inches long. 1846Embleton in Proc. Berw. Nat.
