[a. F. picoté, -ée, pa. pple. of picoter to prick often, mark with pricks or points, f. picot: see picot n.]
A. n. A florists' variety of the carnation (Dianthus Caryophyllus), the flowers of which have a light ground, the petals being marked or edged with a darker colour.
The early variety had a white ground marked with specks of colour.
1727Bradley Fam. Dict. s.v. Carnation, Each of those Tribes are very numerous, but chiefly the Picketees, of which, he says, he had seen above an hundred different Sorts in one Garden.1808Sir J. E.
