▪ I. responsory, n.|rɪˈspɒnsərɪ| [In sense 1, ad. late L. responsōria pl. (in med.L. also sing. -ōrium neut., -ōria fem.), f. respons-, respondēre to respond: see -ory. Cf. F. responsoire (Godef.).] 1. Eccl. a. An anthem said or sung after a lesson by a soloist and choir alternately. Often applied to the gradual (which follows the epistle at mass).
