phytane Chem.|ˈfaɪteɪn| [ad. G. phytan (Willstätter & Hocheder 1907, in Ann. d. Chem. CCCLIV. 208): see phyt- and -ane.] A colourless liquid hydrocarbon, 3,7,11,15-tetramethylhexadecane, C20H42, that is the paraffin corresponding to phytol.
