phosphonate, n. Chem.|ˈfɒsfəneɪt| [f. phosphon(ic adj. (s.v. phosphonium n.) + -ate1 1 c.] A salt of a phosphonic acid; also used attrib. to designate an anion of the form RPO3 2- , where R is a hydrocarbon group.
