philanthropist|fɪˈlænθrəpɪst| [f. philanthropy + -ist.] One who practises philanthropy; one who from love of his fellow-men exerts himself for their well-being. Formerly, with the more general sense of ‘friend or lover of man’, and so applied to the Deity, and also to friendly animals.
