[Sp. peso weight, a certain weight of precious metal, a coin of this weight:—L. pensum: see peise n.] The name of a coin, either of gold (peso de oro) or silver (peso de plata), formerly current in Spain and its colonies; now, of a standard silver coin = (in 1905) 5 francs or 3s. 11½d., used in most of the S. American republics. The Mexican silver peso (then = 5·43 francs, or 4s. 3½d.) is known as the Mexican dollar.
