Permian, a. (n.) Geol.|ˈpɜːmɪən|
[f. Perm, the name of a province in Eastern Russia (now a region of the R.S.F.S.R.): see -ian.]
1. [Named by Sir R. Murchison (1841) on account of the extensive development of these strata in the province of Perm.] Name of the uppermost division of the Palæozoic series of strata, lying below the Trias and above the Carboniferous formation, and consisting chiefly of red sandstone and magnesian limestone. Also ellipt. as n. The Permian system, or a formation belonging to it; pl. = Permian strata.
