permalloy|ˈpɜːməlɔɪ| [f. permeability + alloy n.] Any of a series of alloys consisting chiefly of nickel and iron, which have very high magnetic permeability and are widely used in electrical equipment, esp. in telecommunications.
1923Arnold & Elmen in Jrnl. Franklin Inst. CXCV. 621 For convenience we call these peculiarly magnetic alloys by the general name ‘permalloy’, which serves at the same time to recall their characteristic capability of attaining high initial permeability. 1925Chambers's Jrnl. Apr. 220/1 The conductor of this distortionless cable is composed of a special alloy, known as permalloy. 1926Glasgow Herald 9 Sept. 8/4 The Western Union Telegraph Company announce that the laying of the new permalloy cable between England and New York was successfully completed on Sunday last. 1932[see Mumetal]. 1946[see nickel-iron s.v. nickel n. 3 b]. 1965Wireless World Sept. 431/1 The auto-transformer core should be of magnetically soft material such as permalloy, mumetal, H.C.R. alloy or some similar grade. 1969E. N. Simon Dict. Alloys 127 Permalloy 45 contains basically 45 nickel, 55 iron, per cent. Ibid., Permalloy 4-79 contains basically 79 nickel, 4 molybdenum, the balance iron, per cent{ddd}and is used for audio coils, transformers and magnetic shields. |
