Tupi piˈraya, in Brazilian Tupi piˈranya, name of the fish, lit. ‘scissors’.] A voracious fresh-water fish, Serrasalmo piraya, of the Orinoco and other rivers of tropical America, having a serrated belly and sharp lancet-shaped teeth.
