Paraguay (ˈpærəgweɪ, now usu. -gwaɪ) [The name of a river and Republic of South America.] 1. The South American shrub Ilex paraguayensis, commonly called Maté, the leaves of which are dried or roasted, and infused as a beverage in the same way as tea. Hence Paraguay-tea.
