Gr. παρακέντησις tapping, couching, f. παρακεντεῖν to pierce at the side, f. παρα- beside + κεντεῖν to prick, stab.] The operation of making a perforation into some cavity of the body, esp. for the removal of fluid or gas; tapping; also, couching.
