† overˈsty, v. Obs. [OE. oferstíᵹan, f. ofer- over- 1 (b) + stíᵹan to mount, ascend: = OHG. ubarstîgan, Goth. ufarsteigan.] trans. To rise or mount over or above (lit. and fig.); to surmount; to transcend, surpass, excel. Hence † overˈstying vbl. n. (in quot. = passing over or across).
