单词 outher
释义 I. outher, a. pron. Obs. exc. dial.
Forms: α. 1 áhwæðer, áwðer, áuðer, áðer; 4–5 north. awþer, auþer, 5 auther, -ir, 4– ather. β. 3–5 owþer, 3 (Orm.) owwþerr, 4 ouþer, -ir, 4–6 outher, owther (also 9 dial.), 5 owþir, -ere, owdir, 5–6 outhir, owthir, 6 owthyr, ouyer (= ouþer), ouder.
[OE. áwðer, áuðer, áðer, contr. from áhwæðer, lit. ‘whichever of the two’, ‘either of the two’, ‘one or other’, L. utercumque, utervis; f. á ever + hwæðer? which of the two? L. uter? Thence the northern ME. forms. The ME. owþer, outher, points to an OE. óhwæðer, ówðer, f. ó ever: cf. the parallel óhwǽr = áhwǽr, etc.]
1. One or other (of two); either: = either A. 4.
a. as pron. After the OE. period chiefly north. or north-midl.
In quot. c 1000 = One or another of all, any one whatsoever.

b. In OE. used anticipatively to introduce the two (or more) members of an alternative, thus áwðer (or áðer) oððe..oððe.., i.e. either (of the two, or of these), either..or... Cf. the similar use of óðer, other adj. pron. B. 1 b.
In this use áwðer often became quite adverbial, i.e. when the alternative members to which it referred were not ns. It thus resembled the modern either in ‘either on land or on sea’ (exc. in being followed by oððe, which itself had the place and force of ‘either’). In quot. c 1000, auðer follows the alternative clause: cf. either B. 5. other conj. B. 2.
