oil-tree Name for various trees and large shrubs which yield oil; as the Castor-oil plant (Ricinus communis), the Physic-nut tree (Curcas purgans or Jatropha Curcas), the Illupi (Bassia longifolia), and the Oil-palm (Elæis guineensis). In Isa. xli. 19 a literal rendering of Heb. ﻋētz-shemen, prob. oleaster or wild olive (cf. 1 Kings vi. 23, Neh. viii. 15 R.V.).
