ˈnanguer Zool. [See first quot.] A species of antelope formerly accepted by zoologists on the authority of Buffon.
1780Smellie tr. Buffon's Nat. Hist. (1785) VI. 409 The ninth antilope is an animal, which, according to M. Adanson, is called nangueur or nanguer in Senegal. 1801Shaw Gen. Zool. II. ii. 360 The Red Antelope, or Nagor, is much allied to the Nanguer or Dama. 1835E. T. Bennett in Trans. Zool. Soc. I. 2 Pallas adopted the idea in his Monograph of the genus Antilope.., in which the Nanguer was introduced under the name of Antilope Dama, which it has ever since retained. 1868Nat. Encycl.
