myctophid, n. and a. Zool.|ˈmɪktəfɪd| [f. mod.L. family name Myctophidæ, f. the generic name Myctophum (C. S. Rafinesque Indice d'Ittiologia Siciliana (1810) 56), f. Gr. µυκτήρ nose + ὄϕις snake: see -id3.] A small, marine, deep-water fish of the family Myctophidæ, distinguished by luminous organs along its sides; also called lantern-fish. Also as adj., of or pertaining to this family of fishes.
