moonstone|ˈmuːnstəʊn| [f. moon n.1 + stone n., after L. selēnītēs, Gr. σεληνίτης (λίθος) selenite.] ‘A popular name, alluding to the lustre, for some varieties of adularia and albite. The moonstone of the ancients was probably selenite’ (Chester Dict. Min. 1896).
