[f. the Moine (Gael. A'Mhòine), name of an area east of Loch Eriboll in northern Sutherland where rocks of the series are exposed.]
Used attrib. and as the Moine(s) to denote a highly folded series of metamorphic rocks, chiefly granulites and schists, in NW. Scotland and western Ireland which are thought to have been deposited in Pre-Cambrian (possibly Torridonian) times and metamorphosed later.
