metronidazole, n. Pharm.|mɛtrəʊˈnaɪdəzəʊl| [f. meth- + -tron- (perh. f. rearrangement of nitro-) + imidazole n.] A pale yellow crystalline imidazole derivative given orally and as a vaginal pessary in treating infections with anaerobic bacteria or protozoa (e.g. trichomoniasis); 2-(2-methyl-5-nitroimidazol-1-yl)ethanol, C3HN2(CH3)(CH2CH2OH)(NO2) .
